My advice is that all citizens of Euro member states should take advantage of the season and get along to your nearest Lidl supermarket and exchange all your worthless euros for the much more valuable chocolate euros. Don't delay - you have until the 24th of December!

I think it is hanging on by a thread already and when Bliar resigns on ill health ground just before the Hutton Report it will be a dead duck and tey will have to start unravelling it. Jan 8th to Jun of the same year, should be enough time to set up national currencies again?

The inherent economic differences between a number of member states will cause the euro to collapse near the end of 2004. The euro constraints will make a recession in europe 2003 dip into a depression in 2004 and member states will withdraw from the euro.

Ron Scaia, US, but for the past 3 yrs the UK
What collapse? It isn't going to. The British Pound Sterling on the other hand has to. Live in the UK for a couple years, taste reality as an average UK citizen (no, forget I said taste!), listen to the people--the lament over the big nothing the Pound buys them in their own country--and feel the British system's hands scraping the last pound out of your pocket; realize that eighty odd percent of Britain's citizenry are living on major plastic just to (this is a recent statistic provided buy the BBC)...I think you get the idea. Wait. Three more (it's good pickens. What can I tell ya?).
Realize that the housing industry has single handedly perpetrated a fraudulent valuation system which it has duped buyers with, and thus wildly inflated 'cost of purchase' (this also the product of a very recent 'BBC TV Exposes Estate Agents' scam report. Britain's famous, once the envy of the world's NHS (National Health System) is absolutely on its backside; I'm talking cues of 80 or more people, just to see a dentist (again the subject of TV nightly reports and WEB courtesy of investigations.
My final one is a bute. Try this on for size: you stop at the local petrol station, fill up your average auto, watch the tote ring itself up to well over forty-five pounds--that's 1.8 something against the buck right now--and realize you've just squished 60 to 70 bucks out of your pocket.... Say no more, ya know wha' I mean, gov? An all of this doesn't even reach down as deeply as reality allows the financial troubles of the UK to exist at this moment in time.
So, my guess is not to predict the collapse of the Euro. Au contraire. This is approximately when the Pound Sterling's going to hit the fan.
You see, what I'd really love for someone to explain (because I have my own thoughts on this) is, statiscally speaking, how IS the Pound Sterling actually valued against other currencies; in my case the US dollar. Seriously, I've never known (candidly admitting my lack of bean-counter acumen. I've read that over time the UK has attempted to realign its currency on several occasions even with Germany's and once with the US. But from my vantage point, I just can't see any reason for the Pound to be valued so high against the buck. Is it a matter of GDP?
Thanks, Ron Scaia
P.S. (I just can't help myself) You want to check out something rediculous: the British Road Tax. For instance, I drive a 330 CI Beamer--I also pay for it!--and the road tax (yup, that's just for the permission to roll over Britain's, how shall I say this, a bit less than lovely roads, is 4,500 Pounds! I could go on forever...but I'll save it all for a book.

I believe that with the joining countries seeing the EU for what it really is, another Soviet, and with the increased costs by Britain, Germany, Ireland and Holland to finance the new members, along with CAP reductions to French farmers in lieu of Polish farmers, continued mass unemployment within the Eurozone and continued breaking of the Growth and Stability pact by the Big 2, the ECB raising interest rates to a 5 year high, will see the Euro head for where it belongs, on the Monopoly board.

Dear Ron (USA in UK for 3 Years), On behalf of the entire country: why dont you go back to the bibel belt, gas guzzling, hicksville, backwater town in the USA from whence you came to us. Some points; At least we have the NHS (which you mock), try to restrict our pollution by increasing fuel taxes (which you also mock), have a resonably accesible higher education system (which you neglect to mention), know that countries exist beyond our borders (which you forget), and have buildings older than your entire country. For good measure; The UK is the single best performing economy in the EU AND THE G8 (of which the United States of Whateva is a member I add), and (as your profile bears witness to) is a hell'u'va lot better than the ol' US of A.

Once Italy pulls, out the Greeks may well follow and maybe the Portugese. It might of survived if France, Germany and Italy had kept to the stability pact but due to their inability to lower GDP percentage borrowing to realistic proportions it has became a laughing stock. Exports will not become more competitive as the exchange rate between different EU countries will exist just it will be fixed. Anyway the EU imports less from the UK than the UK imports. For example, in a trade war, Britain could put a tariff on Champagne. This would ruin France's vine yards as the UK is the worlds largest importer of Champagne even ahead of the US at 35 Million bottles a year. The last time Britain went into monetary union with Germany, it caused a collapse in the stock market and the tory government. Anyway, western countries are possibly on the way out especially in GDP as countries like China will overtake all even the US.

well the euro is falling fast and other countries such as Germany, Italy, Holland, and many others wanting to go back to their original currency. I see that a lot more failure in the union will bring the governments to their knees and ask for their old currencies back for good. Plus Germany has changed their currency so many times that it wouldn't suprise me if they changed back. The euro has been bad for many of the nation's economies, because they get less with the euro.

I believe that the euro will collapse around this time. As soon as there is a "real" recession, the member states will pull out one by one just as happened in the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. I believe the EU will fall shortly afterwards and the real currencies re emerge. As the saying goes- "Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it". This is a grand example of repeating past failures.

Each country has its own economy and by combining the currencies you are combining the economies. Thus, when one of the larger economies, such as Germany, goes into recession, as it inevitably will, it will drag the others down with it.

I hate the EURO, only because I believe that when one visits a country, you should have THEIR money,
not some flashy crap like the EUR... : ((
Also, where is the history of the people going? Oh yeah, there was some special dude, but whatever!
I mean Freud, Volta, Montessori, Ensor, SAX, Sibilius(sp?), Guaß, Gama, Raphael,
Cézanne, Exupéry, Colon, Pizarro, Joyce, etc.... I don't see any on the EURs... : (
Oh, great, 2007, 8, 9 MORE are supposed to ditch their money -- SIT, SKK, PLN, EEK, LVL, LTL, HRK, CZK...

That's the point, Nik, there are no national icons on the Euro BANKNOTES as they are not national BANKNOTES they are transnational that are meant to 'evoke not specific points of Europeanness, but a composite, shared sense of union' , not insular nationalism in which case the euro notes would be merely a composite of the Mark,Franc,Lira,Peseta. I highlight the word banknotes as if you were to look closer at the Euro which you 'hate' you would see that each of the 12(and rising) meber states of the Eurozone each get to mint their own national coins with a nationalised back, where such luminaries as the poetic 'marianne' of France, Cervantes of Spain, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart of Austria and my own Irish Celtic Harp are immortalised in the nickel and copper of the Euro Coins. LONG LIVE THE EUROZONE, LONG LIVE EUROPE!

This is my prediction :
In 2007 the new french president is the libral Nicolas Sarkozy, for reforms the France and have a good economic growth rate, he decides to modify the interests rates, that cause a problem with the Europe, so France withdraw from the euro, that cause a domino effect wich cause the departure of Italy and Spain in the middle of 2008 so the EU décide to the end the euro experience after the 31/12/2008.

Just after UKIP win an historic 1st term, pulling Britain out of the house of cards, that is the EU. Other countries that prop the EU up with cash, such as Germany and France, realise that it is not doing the citizens of their nations any good either. The problem with picking exact times is that they're rarely correct.
It seems that as soon as the euro is introduced as the currency it falls out of favour. "Open your minds euro sceptics" rings hollow when contrasted to that reality. As the US dollar loses it's absoloute dominance pressure will be put on the euro that could very well crush it. Southern Europe cannot compete anymore, even within the EU. The promises of price stability and keeping the products of EU member state's competetive within and out of the EU proved dead-wrong.

Alan Walters is undoubtedly correct in his prediction of the Euro's demise, he has just got the timescale wrong, i.e he is being overly optimistic. The Federal Government of the EU will pull out all the stops to keep the Dodo alive (and the UK Gov will do all it can to help; this will buy some time, but the collapse is inevitable.

I'll be 90 that day and if still around will rise up and smite this and any other future UK (or English)Parliament for such supreme stupidity as still being in the EU.
The difficulty will be to remove all those polititians & bureaucrats who have their snouts so firmly stuck in the trough

The euro will colapse when the UK leaves the EU as we have to support this currency even though we do not use it, it may happen earlier if other gross contributers leave

Thge Germans will throw money, ours as well, at keeping the Euro. This is when I think that all Gold and money reserves will run out.

The Euro is in a great position to become the worlds main trading currency in a few years. The United States had many currecncies before We united to the dollar. There are growing pains and ups and downs. The Euro should learn not to have enormous debt like the U.S. To collapse the U.S> currency could be an act like oil producing countries only trading in Euro. There would be a huge selloff of dollars. Or what if China called in part of its 120 billion dolars of U.S. debt it has in the U.S.? This would be catastrphic for the United Staes and also for other countries including China however some countries are willing to spend hundreds of billions on a military war and maybe spending hundreds of billions of an economic war is not far off.
I predict the Euro is fine

I think the euro, while weighed down with its current, internal contradictions will surmount these obstacles over the next 5 to 10 years. The saying 2Rome wasn't built in a day" comes to mind when one thinks of the euro. Tha said, the euro will probably die, not on the account of poor performance of the euro but on the account of the creation of a global currency.
